Solar panels, also known as solar photovoltaics or solar PV, have been a popular renewable energy choice for over two decades. There has been various funding and schemes over the years to encourage and support property owners who install solar panels. But even without these incentives, solar PV panels still remain an excellent choice for reducing your carbon footprint and saving money on your electricity bills.
The first question we are normally asked is ‘do they work in the UK as we don’t get much sun?’ The answer is yes, solar panels do work on cloudy days. The stronger the sunshine the more electricity is produced, but even on overcast days the cloud is still penetrated by a sufficient amount of solar radiation, enough to generate electricity.

Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels are made up using photovoltaic
cells that capture solar radiation (energy) from the sun and covert it into electricity. The cells are set between semi-conducting materials, usually silicon. When light shines on the material it becomes energised and creates a flow of electricity. The solar cells don’t need direct sunlight to generate electricity as they react to visible light therefore allowing them to work even on cloudy days.
The electricity must then pass through an inverter to make it suitable for use in the home. The solar cells initially generate a DC current (direct current) which must be converted to an AC current (alternating current) before being useable. The inverter is normally positioned inside your home and as close to the solar panels as possible, such as the loft or garage. Micro inverters are also available and tuck beneath each solar panel.

Very impressed
Very impressed with our recent solar panel install with Vanadium! They have been professional and responsive throughout, and as they are MCS registered I’ve just been set up for export so I can get money back for excess solar as well as saving on daily usage (it took a few weeks since install which is standard). We had a 4.7kw system installed across 2 roofs and they did a great job at a fair price. We particularly liked the idea of all black panels and the black skirting to keep the pigeons out and look good! Very happy with their service and friendliness!

Such a great job!
From initial quote to finish this company have been fantastic. Getting an ev point when you have no idea is a minefield and Michael explained all the processes and how they work, he was patient and knowledgeable and answered all my questions in a very quick timescale. The engineers Ashley and Michael (apprentice) text when they were on route and were professional and polite whist at my home. The job was completed to a very high standard and they took into account all of our requests with regards to location etc. Their workmanship is so neat and tidy that apart from the unit on the wall you would never have known they’d been there. Thank you to both Michaels and Ashley for such a great job!

I would highly recommend Vanadium
Michael at Vanadium contacted me following my online expression of interest in an Easee charger. I have never had an EV, and knew nothing about charging. We had 2 or 3 conversations during which he explained the process and arranged installation within a couple of weeks.
Rob the electrician who installed my unit was friendly and professional, and gave me clear instructions. My Easee charger looks great and, when my car finally arrived last week, is very simple to use
I would highly recommend Vanadium.

A solar panel system needs hardly any maintenance at all – they even self-clean when it rains. A quick washdown with a hose a few times a year will shift any other dirt or dust. Zero expense and no need to call an expert out.
No. No red tape, no hassle – a solar panel system doesn’t need any special permission from your local authority to be fitted onto your home.
The only exception to this is if you live in a listed building or live in a designated Conservation Area or World Heritage site. Even then, you can still have solar panels installed – they need fitting onto a roof that isn’t visible from a road.
There’s a big difference between sunlight and daylight. Solar panels need daylight to generate power – not the sun’s rays.
This means you can still generate power even on cloudy days. In fact, less direct sunlight can be beneficial – too much heat can reduce the power solar panels capture by up to 25%.
You don’t have to add a smart solar battery. However, without one you will only be able to use the energy your new PV panels generate for your home at the time it is generated. When there is no solar energy to tap into, your energy supply will revert back to the Grid. A smart solar battery stores your energy ready so you can use it or store it for when you need it.
During your free home survey, one of our solar energy specialists will assess your home and rooftop – this will determine what your solar panel system options are and how many PV panels you need to produce sufficient energy for your household.
We can also give you a good idea of how much money you could make by trading your solar energy on the Grid.
By generating and using your own solar energy – instead of power from the National Grid – you can make significant savings on your electricity bills. The Energy Saving Trust calculator estimates that a typical 4kWp solar panel system can knock between £600-£900 off your annual bill with the Smart Export Guarantee SEG depending on where you live.
Using battery storage alongside your solar panels can further increase your savings – because a battery will store the surplus energy that you produce, so you can use it when the sun goes down instead of drawing it from the Grid.
